The Laboratory of Microbial Symbiosis studies the relationships microorganisms form with their hosts and how those relationships evolve, using lichens, forest fungi, arthropods and aquatic systems. Field collection, culture, sequencing, metabolomics and bioinformatics all happen within the lab, so a student can follow a project through all of them.

Who we are looking for

• People curious about the diversity of organisms and how they evolve
• People willing to work both in the field and at the bench
• People open to learning data analysis and programming (No prior skill is required. It can be learned here.)

What you will learn

• Collection, identification and culture of lichens and fungi
• Genome and metabarcoding sequencing, and analysis of the resulting data
• Metabolomic and chemical analysis of secondary metabolites
• Writing papers and presenting at conferences

International applicants

Enquiries from outside Korea are welcome. Research in the lab can be carried out entirely in English, including lab meetings and supervision.

For life outside the lab, we recommend picking up basic Korean. It is not required for the research, but it makes living in Changwon much easier.

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), run by the Korean government, supports international students in degree programmes here, and we are happy to advise on the application. For postdoctoral positions, please write to us and we can discuss the options together.
